Welcome to the July
Newsletter
Dear Maths Friends- welcome to the final
(and shorter) newsletter of the school year. By now I hope you are enjoying a
well-earned rest. I have even managed to get to my first ever Ashes Test
Cricket, as well as a joyous weekend trip away with my wife to Northampton –
see the blog for details. (We also both
celebrate our birthdays and our anniversary in July, so a busy month all round!)
Congratulations to those of you who correctly worked out my age from the
mathematical clue…I won’t fall into the trap of giving clues about Mrs J’s age though!
I am moving offices for the remainder of this week, and from next Wednesday I shall be
on holiday until 19th August, so please don’t worry if I don’t
respond to your emails or calls straight away. I will however be checking
emails regularly so if you are interested in booking INSET or Lectures etc,
feel free to get in touch via info@andrewjeffrey.co.uk and I will reply when I can. Orders received
between 2nd and 19th August will be posted on 20th
August. See item 2 for a very special offer, as promised last month, which is
exclusively for subscribers – regular visitors to the site will not be offered this.
Finally
a reminder that there is no newsletter during August. I WILL be writing over the Summer, but not a
newsletter. More in September!
That’s all for now – enjoy the summer,
and I hope you get better weather than we have had so far!

2. SPECIAL OFFER
exclusively for subscribers
As I mentioned it was my birthday on 1st
July, so for the remainder of July and August, if you order the download of 100
Top Tips, you will also receive, FREE of charge, the download of Top 20 Maths
Displays. The same applies to those ordering hard copies. Please note that this
applies ONLY to subscribers as a ‘thank you’. In order to qualify, please
mention ‘newsletter subscriber offer’ when you order.
3. LAUNCH PARTY DATE
CHANGE – Please Read Carefully.
Due to circumstances beyond our control,
the launch party for ‘Be A Wizard With Numbers’ has now been moved to Friday 18th
September at 7:30pm. I realize this is far less convenient for many people, but
the venue managed to double book us so we had no choice. There will be a live
band, dancing, a finger buffet and of course some games and competitions. Let
us know by email if you wish to attend. Tickets are free, but we need to know
for catering purposes how many of you will be coming.
4. Puzzle Time!
Nobody provided a correct solution to
last month’s puzzle, so it is still open. I had promised to post the solution,
but I think I will give it another month just to see what solutions people come
up with!
This month I did receive an email from my
friend Douglas Buchanan, who is a passionate populariser
of mathematics, running free events around the country. He reminded me of the
game 24, where you have to combine 4 numbers to get 24, using only addition, subtraction,
multiplication and division. The numbers he gave me to use were 3,3,8 and 8. That would be easy if it weren’t for the fact
that you must use all four of the numbers, so just writing ‘3 x 8 = 24’ is not
allowed!
Any
takers? It’s fiendish – I vaguely remember
tackling this years ago and I’m pretty sure fractions
are involved, and you will probably need brackets, but sadly my memory isn’t so
great…
See you in September, with the answer,
and lots more ideas for enlivening your classroom.
Thanks for being a subscriber, and
