That's What Friends Are For
So yesterday afternoon I came back from the hospital feeling invincible.
All new fathers will understand that euphoric feeling - I felt I could run for hours and hours (actually I tried today and realised how wrong I was - I went far too fast and burnt out after pounding just two miles in 15 minutes - my heart monitor showed 194 at one point - how wrong can one man be!)
So I sat on the sofa to watch the first of the World Cup semi-finals and was just about to drop off when the doorbell rings.
It's my neighbour, with two glasses and a bottle of champagne that his wife had said they should save for a special occasion but had said he should bring round as the birth of Benedict fits the bill. Bless her! (She did get to write her essay in peace as well!)
What a pair of stars! We sunk the champagne, and a bottle of red from some other lovely friends who had looked after son 2 yesterday morning, as well as having gone out of their way to find bolts for our changing table, feed us a roast the night before etc. We are so grateful to have so many good friends.
So the two of us watched the second half of Uruguay v Holland, as we solved the problems of the world.
Which is amazing, since neither of us are taxi drivers or hairdressers. (Though come to think of it, he used to be a hairdresser.)

This Time Tomorrow...
...I shall be a dad again, God willing. It feels so odd actually knowing when he is coming - I have a huge list of people I have promised to ring - I know I will miss someone out.
So - I apologise to you all in advance. Forgive me if I allow myself a very small malt this evening.
And a very large one tomorrow, obviously.

I'm So Excited!
I was busy yesterday so I recorded the England v Germany match. I have managed to avoid all radio and TV today somehow so as not to spoil my enjoyment of what is bound to be a classic match.
Can't wait to get home this evening and watch us thrash the Germans.
(I notice that a lot of people round us have got so excited about our win that they have taken down their England flags, presumably so as not to appear too arrogant about getting into the last 8.)
Typical English humility, obviously.
Come on England!!!

Shorts and Wellies Can Only Mean One Thing
I was in Bristol today and yesterday, and passing through I was somewhat surprised to see loads of students in shorts, t-shirts and trendy wellies, and carrying equall trendy if suspiciously lightweight tents.
Given that it was a sweltering hot day I took an embarrassingly long while to work it out.
It's the start of the rainy season, or 'Glastonbury' as it is more affectionately known.
I think it's one of those urban myths that it ALWAYS rains at Glastonbury (or Wimbledon).
But we'll see. Anyway, Andy Murray is still in and we are almost halfway through the first week!!! Go Andy! (Who for now is still British) Still - have fun, and remember kids - grass is for standing on, not for inhalation purposes...
